In our information-driven age, we’re constantly told that staying updated with the news is crucial. We’re inundated with headlines, alerts, and updates from various sources, all emphasizing the importance of being well-informed. But lately, I’ve been challenging this notion and asking myself: What is the true value of keeping up with the news? No matter how “important” the news appears to be, why is it important for me to know all of this? Could it be that my constant consumption of the news is the aim? Might there be other motives at play?

Drowning in a Sea of News

Like many of you, I’ve experienced the overwhelming nature of our news consumption. It seems as though there’s no escaping the constant stream of information. From push notifications on our phones to the endless scroll of social media feeds, it’s easy to feel drowned in a sea of news. But amidst this deluge, I’ve found myself questioning how much of it truly impacts me – or perhaps better said, how much I personally matter to the issue. Aside from consuming the information and getting agitated, is there anything I can actually do? Or even should do with the information?

The Rare Relevance of News

When we pause to consider why staying informed is essential, we often realize that our personal reasons are quite specific and infrequent. Sure, the news can be valuable during elections, for making certain career choices, or for safety-related updates. But let’s be honest, these instances don’t occur every day or even every month and if it’s important enough, you’ll find out anyway! And even then, the news should not supersede your values or your personal goals built from those values.

The Paralysis of Powerlessness

Think about the ongoing conflicts and crises that seem to persist indefinitely. Take the Israel-Palestine conflict, for example. While I don’t intend to diminish the significance of such issues, it’s crucial to acknowledge our limitations. For most of us, there’s little we can directly do to influence these complex situations. Posting opinions on social media may provide momentary relief to the poster, but does it genuinely drive meaningful change for those in the conflict?

The Influence of Propaganda

We also must consider the role of propaganda and media manipulation. Decades ago, propaganda was a potent tool for shaping public opinion. Isn’t it naive to assume that its presence has diminished? With sensationalism and bias present in all news outlets, distinguishing fact from fiction has become increasingly challenging, if not impossible. And it comes in many forms – just because it was filmed on a smartphone shouldn’t add a shred of credibility to the authenticity of the news.

Also, how soon will we “memory-hole” these issues and forget about them?

Here’s an example of news items through recent years that we seem to ignore now:

  • The treatment of Uyghurs in China
  • The Maui fires and resulting homelessness
  • The East Palestine train-derailment and resulting contamination
  • The Las Vegas shooting
  • Recent news about the Kennedy Assassination
  • Government acknowledgment of the existence of aliens

What happened with all that? We moved onto the next story. Sadly, just like we’ll move on from today’s. Our emotions are being manipulated under the spell of media giants.

Empowering Personal Action

So, where does this leave us? Instead of being swept up in the constant news cycle, I’ve found solace in redirecting my energy toward more tangible actions. Whether it’s lending a helping hand to a neighbor, offering support to a friend, or actively participating in my local community, these actions have a more immediate and meaningful impact to the world I want to live in.

I’m not fooling myself into believing it will solve the world’s problems, but it keeps the world’s problems from taking control in my life and preventing me from being a force for good.

Less Judgment, More Understanding

As such, I’ve come to realize the significance of empathy and understanding. Instead of perpetuating rumors or stoking outrage, I’ve tried to engage in constructive conversations and foster connections. It’s easy to succumb to the divisiveness that often characterizes today’s news landscape, but I believe that by promoting understanding and unity, we can genuinely contribute to our communities.

In conclusion, the value of staying informed is a personal choice, and I’ve learned that it’s essential to find a balance that preserves our mental and emotional well-being so that the best in us can be brought to the service of others. While global events undoubtedly matter, the power to effect positive change often lies closer to home. By focusing on our actions and interactions, we can make a meaningful impact on the world around us, one step at a time.
